Künker sale 354, lot 5130

This specimen was lot 5130 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €3,000 (about US$4,175 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"CHINA, Volksrepublik. 50 Yuan 1996. Panda. 15,55 g Feingold. GOLD. R Stempelglanz. (people's republic of China, fifty yuan of 1996, panda, ½ oz. Rare, uncirculated.)"

The Chinese government has, since the mid 1980's, produced a mind boggling array of bullion related collectibles. The gold panda is one of the most popular. This one was issued when gold was at a very low price and hence sales were poor.

Recorded mintage: 13,849.

Specification: 15.55 g, 0.999 fine gold, 0.500 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 886, Fr-B5; Wang/Chan/Lin CC-807 A.
