The first specimen was lot 1685 in Goldberg sale 106 (Los Angeles, September 2018), where it sold for $78. The catalog description[1] noted, "China. 5 Yuan, 1996. Eastern Unicorn. NGC graded MS-67." The second specimen was lot 54091 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $132. The catalog description[2] noted, "CHINA. Gold 5 Yuan, 1996. Unicorn Series. NGC MS-69. Fr-B106; KM-939; NPB-37a. An attractive, prooflike coin with reflective fields and frosty devices." This type is one of several unicorn themed NCLT's issued in 1996 (KM 938, 5 yuan, silver; KM 941, 10 yuan, silver; KM 942, 10 yuan, gold; KM 943, 25 yuan, gold; KM 944, 25 yuan, platinum; KM 946, 50 yuan, gold; KM 945, 50 yuan, silver; KM 948, 100 yuan, platinum; KM 976, 150 yuan, silver). The popularity of this series must have dwindled as it was terminated before the end of the decade.

Recorded mintage: unknown + 5,000 proofs.

Specification: 1.56 g, 0.999 fine gold, .050 troy oz AGW.
