This specimen was lot 51451 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $21,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "Low Mintage 5 Ounce Gold Struck to Celebrate Hong Kong's Return to China. CHINA. 500 Yuan Gold Proof, 1996. NGC PROOF-69 Ultra Cameo. Struck to commemorate the return of Hong Kong to China, Series II. A brilliant and attractive 5 Ounce Gold Proof with hard mirrored fields and frosted cameo devices. Serial number on rim at 6: # "111"." The peaceful reabsorption of Hong Kong into China was a huge coup for the communist regime and was celebrated in several NCLT's.
