Chile 1971 100 pesos
This specimen was lot 1086 in Sedwick sale 34 (Winter Park, FL, November 2023), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "Santiago, Chile, gold 100 pesos (10 condores), 1971, NGC MS 64. Satin surfaces with muted luster but practically no marks." The specimen shown is an example of a type struck in Santiago, Chile, 1932, 1946-64, 1968-80. It was issued steadily with no pretense of it being a circulating coin, especially after the peso had been dropped in favor of the escudo in 1960. It was and is a bullion coin, along with a similar gold 20 pesos (KM 168) and 50 pesos (KM 169). The type is common but the recent bold rise in the price of gold has made this coin expensive.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 20.33 g, 0.900 fine gold, 32 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-175; Fr-54.
