Chile 1963 100 pesos
This specimen was lot 70532 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 100 Pesos, 1963-So. Santiago Mint. NGC MS-63★. An extremely vibrant and lustrous example of this always pleasing type, offering bright cartwheel brilliance and well detailed devices." The specimen shown is an example of a type struck in Santiago, Chile, 1932, 1946-64, 1968-80. It was issued steadily with no pretense of it being a circulating coin, especially after the peso had been dropped in favor of the escudo in 1960. It was and is a bullion coin, along with a similar gold 20 pesos (KM 168) and 50 pesos (KM 169). The type is common but the recent bold rise in the price of gold has made this coin expensive.
Recorded mintage: 210,000.
Specification: 20.34 g, 0.900 fine gold, AGW: 0.5885 oz, 31 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: Fr-54; KM-175.
