Chile 1962 100 pesos
The specimen shown is an example of a type first struck in Santiago, Chile, in 1926. It was issued steadily 1932-80 with no pretense of it being a circulating coin, especially after the peso had been dropped in favor of the escudo in 1960. It was and is a bullion coin, along with a similar gold 20 pesos (KM 168) and 50 pesos (KM 169). The type is common but the recent bold rise in the price of gold has made this coin expensive. This specimen was lot 72073 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Santa Ana, CA, May 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 100 Pesos, 1962-So. NGC MS-64. Sharply struck with frosty luster."
