The first specimen was lot 45607 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $105. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 1/2 Centavo, 1962-So. Santiago Mint. NGC MS-63. Seemingly a Proof striking with bold reflective surfaces." The specimen shown is an example of a type struck in Santiago in 1962-63. In 1960, the peso was dropped in favor of the escudo, with 1 escudo = 1000 pesos. This coin replaced the aluminum five pesos (KM 180) of 1956. The escudo itself was abandoned in 1975 for a return to the peso, with one new peso = 100 escudos.
Recorded mintage: 3,750,000 plus proofs.
Specification: 2 g, aluminum, 25 mm diameter, plain edge.
Catalog reference: KM-192.
