The specimen shown is a type struck in Chile 1971-72 only. It is an aluminum version of a coin previously struck in copper-nickel. It is worthless in all grades. José Miguel Carrera Verdugo (1785-1821), a rival of O'Higgins in the struggle for independence, appears on the obverse. The escudo superseded the peso in 1960, with one escudo = 1000 pesos.
Recorded mintage: 160,900,000 for 1971-72.
