The specimen shown is a type struck in Chile 1972 only. It is an aluminum version of a coin previously struck in copper-nickel. It is worthless in all grades. Lautaro (1534-57), a Mapuche chief who led a rebellion against the Spanish, appears on the obverse. The escudo superseded the peso in 1960, with one escudo = 1000 pesos.
Recorded mintage: unknown but common.
Specification: 1.5 g, aluminum, 22.8 mm diameter.
