Chile 1970 50 pesos
This specimen was lot 71499 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $552. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 50 Pesos, 1970-So. Santiago Mint. NGC MS-65. Delivering an intense shimmering eye appeal, this wholesome example yields a Gem vibrance and much wholesome charm throughout." This type struck 1926, 1958, 1961-62, 1965-70, 1974. This unfortunate specimen did not realize its bullion value despite its gem certification. This coin has no pretense of being a circulating coin, especially since the peso had been dropped in favor of the escudo in 1960. It was and is a bullion coin, along with a similar gold twenty pesos (KM 168) and 100 pesos (KM 175).
Recorded mintage: unknown but a better date.
Specification: 10.16 g, 0.900 fine gold, 24.5 mm diameter, AGW: 0.2943 oz.
Catalog reference: Fr-55; KM-169.
