Aureo sale 238, lot 491

This specimen was lot 491 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 1,000 euro (about US$1,586 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1806. Santiago. FJ. 8 reales. Bella. Parte de brillo original. Rara y más así. EBC. (eight reales of 1806, Santiago mint. Handsome, lustrous, rare, extremely fine.)"

Despite what seems to be a fairly substantial recorded mintage and nearly continuous production during 1791-1808, Santiago portrait eight reales of Charles IV are scarce though not rare like the earlier bust eight reales of Charles III. Many can be found as the undertype of Brazilian 960 réis of 1810-26. The assayer FJ appears for 1803-17, along with an 1806/5 overdate.

Recorded mintage: 155,000.

Specification: 27.07 grams, 0.896 fine silver, .780 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-13969 (listed as JF), Cal. 761, KM 51.
