Sedwick sale 34, lot 1988
Sed34-1988r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1988 in Sedwick sale 34 (Winter Park, FL, November 2023), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "Santiago, Chile, bust 1 real, Charles IV, 1806 FJ, NGC VF 20. Dark, circulation cameo contrast fields with lighter high points, slight off-center obverse strike." This specimen is one of a series struck 1792-1808 in Santiago during the reign of Charles IV. The auctioneers miscatalogued it as a one real. The opening of an enlarged Casa de Moneda in 1805 allowed the increase in mintages and this type is not rare. A overdate, 1806/5, is also recorded.

Recorded mintage: 59,000.

Specification: 1.69 g, 0.896 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Cayón-13340, KM 57.
