Chile 1806-So FJ 8 escudos
The specimen shown was lot 230 in Aureo y Calicó sale 242 (Barcelona, March 2012), where it sold for 1,450 € (about US$2,251 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Carlos IV (1788-1808). 1806/5. Santiago. FJ. 8 escudos. Leves rayitas. Pátina. Parte de brillo original. Bella. Rara así. EBC+. (Charles IV, 1788-1808, eight escudos of 1806, Santiago mint. Light nicks, handsome, rare, extremely fine.)"
This type is listed in the SCWC for 1791-1808. It bears Charles' name and the bust of Charles III, who died in 1788. The bust of Charles IV appears on the four escudos but not the eight escudos. This type is fairly common for Spanish colonial gold.
