This specimen was lot 23531 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $1,410. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos IIII gold 8 Escudos 1805-FJ, AU53 PCGS, nicely struck with luster in the legends, an attractive colonial 8 Escudos." This type is listed in the SCWC for 1791-1808. It bears Charles' name and the bust of Charles III, who died in 1788. The bust of Charles IV appears on the four escudos but not the eight escudos. This type is fairly common for Spanish colonial gold.

Recorded mintage: 44,000.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW.
