Colombia 1805-P JT 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 20740 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $9,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos IIII gold 8 Escudos 1805JT Popayán, MS64 NGC Millennia Collection, a fabulous coin with eye-popping mint luster and highly reflective surfaces, easily one of the finest 8 Escudos we have seen and a coin with an impressive pedigree." The type was struck in Popayán in Nueva Granada (now Colombia) 1791-1808. An overdate, 1805/4, is noted for the year as well as another assayer, JF. Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) and its neighbor Popayán were the most prolific issuers of gold coins during the colonial period and this coin is common. Four other eight escudos of this date and mint were offered in this Heritage sale.
