This specimen was lot 453 in Soler y Llach's January 2010 sale, where it sold for 550 euros (about US$937 with fees). The catalog description noted,

"CARLOS IV. 4 Escudos. 1805. NUEVO REINO. J.J. RARA. MBC-/MBC" (Charles IV four escudos of 1805, Nuevo Reino mint. Rare, Very Fine).

This type was struck at Bogotá thru 1807. Popayán produced the type in 1801 only. The only four escudos struck after independence is a very rare type of 1826.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.53 g, 0.875 fine gold, .380 troy oz AGW.
