This specimen was lot 12182 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $4,406. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 8 Escudos, 1805-NRJJ. NGC MS-63. Frosty mint luster." This type was struck at Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) and Popayán 1791-1808 and is the most common gold coin of Charles IV. It remains much in demand and is still expensive. Many overdates are recorded, including an 1805/4. Assayer JJ is recorded for 1774-1808. In 1785, the purity was reduced from .901 to 0.875 fine.
