Colombia 1805-P JF escudo
This specimen was lot 939 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $3,360. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA, Popayán, gold bust 1 escudo, Charles IV, 1805 JF, NGC MS 62, finest known in NGC census. Brightly lustrous, the obverse slightly off-center with minor rim-flaw as a result, still astounding quality for a Colombian bust 1 escudo, the finest at NGC by four grades. (Note: Restrepo only lists the 5/4 overdate for this assayer, which seems to be a simple omission error and not any indicator of relative rarity.)." This specimen is one of a type struck at Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) and Popayán 1792-1808. The Colombian mints (Popayán and Nuevo Reino) concentrated on minting gold, to the near exclusion of silver which predominated at the other colonial mints. While this makes Colombian colonial silver coins expensive, Colombian colonial gold is (comparatively) reasonable and this type is common. Assayer JT is listed for 1804-06 and assayer JF for 1792-1820.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.38 g, 0.875 fine gold.
