Mexico 1805-Mo TH 8 escudos
Shown is an 1805MoTH eight escudos, one of a type struck 1791-1808. The eight escudos is among the more available Mexican colonial gold types though the recent rise in the price of gold has pushed this coin out of the reach of many collectors. This coin was legal tender in the United States, where it was known as a doubloon, and would have traded for $15.50. Occasionally counterfeits made of platinum turn up of this type. These were likely made in the mid-nineteenth century, when the price of platinum was below the price of gold and making such a fake could be profitable. This specimen was lot 3207 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $7,475. The catalog description[1] noted, "1805 TH 8 escudos. Mexico City mint. MS-64 (NGC). Types as above. A frosty yellow gold specimen of near gem quality. Boldly struck, fully lustrous and beautiful, only a few contact marks on the portrait prevent a higher grade. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW. This specimen: 27.05 grams, 36.40 mm diameter.
