Mexico H3041-31303r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31303 in Heritage sale 3041 (Chicago, August 2015), where it sold for $3,525. The catalog description[1] noted, "Charles IV gold 2 Escudos 1805 Mo-TH MS62 NGC, Mexico City mint. Brilliant Mint State and choice for the assigned grade, with prooflike fields, sharply defined features and random surface contact marks preventing a higher technical designation. The light old toning is quite gorgeous and contributes to the great eye-appeal of this finely preserved example. Also a scarcer date, missing in Norweb, Gerber and Eliasberg, and currently the only certified example by NGC. A prize! From The Rudman Collection of Mexican Coins." All Mexican colonial gold may be considered scarce. The type was struck 1791-1808 and is the most plentiful of all the colonial two escudos.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.875 fine gold, .190 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-14282, Fr-45, KM 132, Cal-371.
