This specimen was lot 1353 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $1150. The catalog description[1] noted, "1804/3 FJ 4 escudos. Santiago mint. Fine-15 (NGC). Bust of Carlos IV to right, legends around/arms, legends around. Medium gold with deeper toning in the recesses, some minor rim bruises. Purchased from Mortimer Hammel, April 18, 1945." This type was struck at Bogotá thru 1790-1807. Popayán produced the type in 1790, 1792-93, 1797-98, 1801-02 only. The only four escudos struck after independence is a very rare type of 1826.
