Mexico H3041-31324r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31324 in Heritage sale 3041 (Chicago, August 2015), where it sold for $3,172.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Charles IV gold 4 Escudos 1804 Mo-TH AU55 NGC, Mexico City mint. Highly lustrous and rather sharply struck for the date (compare with the noticeably softer strike on the similarly graded Eliasberg piece), with the expected handling marks for the designation and the usual roughness on the bust (see our description of the 4 Escudos 1806/5 TH for a lengthy commentary on this matter). A most attractive type coin for the series, rarely encountered in this quality. From The Rudman Collection of Mexican Coins." All Mexican colonial gold may be considered scarce. The type was struck 1791-1808 and is the most plentiful of all the colonial four escudos.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.53 g, 0.875 fine gold, .380 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-14413, KM 144, Cal-225.
