This specimen was lot 910 in Ponterio sale 164 (New York, January 2012), where it sold for $1,495. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 4 Escudos, 1803/2-FT. PCGS AU-50." The four escudos is the scarcest Mexican colonial gold denomination. Few can afford to collect this type by date so no date brings a premium. This coin was legal tender in the United States, where it would have traded for $7.75.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.54 g, 0.875 fine gold, .380 troy oz AGW.
