Sedwick sale 11, lot 970

The specimen shown was lot 970 in Sedwick sale 11 (Winter Park, FL, April 2011), where it sold for $690. The catalog description[1] noted, "Santiago, Chile, bust 8 reales, Charles IV, 1805FJ. Attractively toned AXF with hint of luster, weak centers, slightly out-of-round flan, stress fracture in front of neck." Despite what seems to be a fairly substantial recorded mintage and nearly continuous production during 1791-1808, Santiago portrait eight reales of Charles IV are scarce though not rare like the earlier bust eight reales of Charles III. Many can be found as the undertype of Brazilian 960 réis of 1810-26. The assayer FJ appears for 1803-17.

Recorded mintage: 159,000.

Specification: 27.07 grams, 0.896 fine silver, .780 troy oz ASW, this specimen 26.5 grams.

Catalog reference: Cayón-13964, KM-51; CT-759.
