This specimen was lot 12101 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $3,172. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 8 Escudos, 1804-FJ. NGC MS-61. Charles IV (1788-1808). Bust of Charles III with title of Charles IV. Well struck and lustrous." The specimen was one of a series struck 1791-1808 during the reign of Charles IV. It bears Charles' name and the bust of Charles III, who died in 1788. The bust of Charles IV appears on the four escudos but not the eight escudos. This type is fairly common for Spanish colonial gold.
