This specimen was lot 51387 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 1/4 Real, 1804-So. Santiago Mint. Charles IV. NGC VF Details--Reverse Spot Removed. Presenting strong detail for the assigned grade with assigned grade referring to numerous instances of tooling that appear mostly around the rampant lion design. From the EMO Collection. Privately purchased from Freeman Craig." The Santiago mint experimented with several designs for the quarter real 1790-93 before settling on the familiar lion and castle type in 1796. It is one of a series minted 1792-1808 for Charles IV and 1810-17 for Ferdinand VII. A hoard of uncirculated 1817's has been dispersed but the other dates are tough to find.
