Chile 1807-So FJ 8 reales
This specimen was lot 20232 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $1,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 8 Reales, 1807-So FJ. Santiago Mint. Charles IV. NGC AU-55. Normal '7' in Date variety. Entirely white with a bold strike, abundant luster and laudable surfaces for the grade. For the specialist, it's worth noting that there are two known varieties for the date, one that displays a large '7' that is evenly spaced and one that shows a small '7' that is distant from the '180'; this coin, which displays the evenly spaced date, appears far less frequently. From the Santa Fe Collection." Despite what seems to be a fairly substantial recorded mintage and nearly continuous production during 1791-1808, Santiago portrait eight reales of Charles IV are scarce though not rare like the earlier bust eight reales of Charles III. Many can be found as the undertype of Brazilian 960 réis of 1810-26. The assayer FJ appears for 1803-17.
Recorded mintage: 94,000.
Specification: 27.07 grams, 0.896 fine silver, .780 troy oz ASW.
