Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1772-IAP 12 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 74633 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 12 Mariengroschen, 1772-IAP. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl I. PCGS AU-58. Though some very minor striking weakness is observed upon the wildman, this dazzlingly toned survivor retains excellent overall appeal and toning, all while displaying hardly any evidence of handling. When cradled back and forth in one's hand, all of the resounding brilliance is released and entrances the eye. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection. Includes ticket from J. Pater." This denomination was one half of a gulden or one-third of a thaler. The denomination was struck with the wild man reverse. The leaping stallion reverse was used on the one-third thaler (KM 980), a coin of the same value. This type is listed for 1735-80 and no date receives a premium.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
