Künker sale 354, lot 5204

This specimen was lot 5204 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €2,000 (about US$2,784 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM, Karl I. 1735-1780. 2 1/2 Taler 1770, Braunschweig. GOLD. Sehr seltener Jahrgang. Vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Auktion Dr. Busso Peus Nachf. 332, Frankfurt/Main 1991, Nr. 1192. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Charles I, 1735-80, 2½ thaler of 1770, Brunswick mint. Very scarce date, extremely fine.)"

This type is listed for 1742-75 but is rare despite the long run of production. The duke also struck five (Fr-714) and ten thaler (Fr-713) gold pieces.
