Stack's Bowers September 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74522

This specimen was lot 74522 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 4 Mariengroschen, 1771-IAP. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl I. PCGS MS-63. A marvelously struck and well-preserved specimen with lustrous and reflective surfaces. Extremely attractive. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1735-80 for Karl I and is common. This denomination was also struck with a leaping stallion reverse (KM 894) but not for 1771. Four mariengroschen made one-sixth gulden, which was originally one ninth of a thaler but had slipped to 2/27 thaler by the end of the reign. Mintmaster IAP appears 1763-72.
