Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1772-IAP 6 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 74516 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $60. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 6 Mariengroschen (1/6 Taler), 1772-IAP. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl I. PCGS AU-53. A well-struck, dove-gray specimen with highlighted features and inscriptions against slightly darker fields - attractive. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection. Ex: Harald Moller auction with ticket." This type was struck 1735-80 for Karl I and is common. Six mariengroschen made a quarter gulden, which was originally one sixth of a thaler but had slipped to one ninth thaler by the end of the reign. Mintmaster IAP appears 1762-72.
