Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1742-IBH thaler Dav-2145
This specimen was lot 30199 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $810. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. Taler, 1742-IBH. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl I. PCGS AU-58. Though a few minor planchet flaws are noted on the wildman side, this delightfully original specimen is free from issue, with just a hint of gentle handling preventing a Mint State designation. The color is mostly an attractive gunmetal gray, with an even deeper nature upon the coat-of-arms side. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This is another in the long series of "wild man" thalers struck in Brunswick-Luneburg and Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This one is recorded for 1735-63 and 1775 and is somewhat scarce. Another thaler, Dav-2147, featuring a leaping stallion, was also struck in 1742.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
