Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1691 24 mariengroschen KM-559
This specimen was lot 22599 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it sold for $50. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneberg-Celle. 24 Mariengroschen (2/3 Taler), 1691-iii. Rudolph August & Anton Ulrich. NGC VF Details. Very deep tone is the reason for the 'Environmental Damage' designation." The wild man was a badge of Brunswick along with the running stallion. Rudolf August and Anton Ulrich shared the ducal title until Rudolf's death 1704, whereupon Anton ruled alone until his death in 1714. This type was struck 1685-1704 and traded for 2/3 thaler altho it weighed only 4/9 thaler.
The Brunswick coinages are among the most complicated series of German states issues outside of Saxony. The SCWC lists coins for Brunswick-Blankenburg, Brunswick-Lüneberg-Calenberg-Hannover, Brunswick-Lüneberg-Celle and Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. Hannover was the most important and eventually absorbed the others before itself being annexed by Prussia in 1866.
