The first specimen was lot 26785 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $763.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel. Rudolf August Taler 1690, AU, well struck with pleasing even olive coloration, overall quite choice, a 'wildly' popular type deserving of a strong bid." This type was struck 1688-92 in Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel and is among the more common thalers of the period. The "wild man" design was popular in Brunswick and Hannover at the time and appeared on many different thalers and minors. Duke Rudolf August ruled 1666-1704. The second specimen was lot 1128 in CNG sale Triton XXVII (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $1,715. The catalog description[2] noted, "GERMANY, Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel (Principality). Rudolf August & Anton Ulrich. 1666-1704 and 1685-1714. AR Taler. Zellerfeld mint. Dated 1690 RB. Coat-of-arms surmounted by five ornately crested helmets / Two wild men standing facing, each holding entwined trees. Toned. In PCGS encapsulation 45194454, graded MS 61. Ex Robert C. Knepper Collection (Stack’s Bowers Galleries, 22 August 2022), lot 30172."
