British West Africa 1936 1/2 penny KM-15
This specimen was lot 73223 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRITISH WEST AFRICA. 1/2 Penny, 1936. London Mint. Edward VIII. PCGS MS-67. Pop: 1, none graded finer by PCGS. A gorgeous example, unequaled in level of preservation and possessing full satiny luster." Edward VIII was king of Great Britain during January to October 1936. Altho many patterns exist, his short reign meant few coins made it to production prior to his abdication. This coin is an exception and is popular for that reason. As it is common, it is affordable. Half pennies were struck for George V and Edward VIII in 1936 at London, King's Norton and the Heaton mint for this colony.
Recorded mintage: 14,760,000 + more from Heaton + more from King's Norton + more for George V.
Specification: copper-nickel, 25.2 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-15.
