British West Africa 1937-KN penny
British West Africa comprised Gambia, Sierra Leone, Gold Coast (now Ghana) and Nigeria. The union broke up in the late fifties as the parts were granted independence. This specimen was lot 71185 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $180. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRITISH WEST AFRICA. Penny, 1937-KN. Kings Norton Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-65 Gold Shield. Steel gray and highly vibrant, this Gem specimen was issued during the first year of reign of George VI. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." This is a common date of a type struck 1937, 1940-47.
