British West Africa comprised Gambia, Sierra Leone, Gold Coast (now Ghana) and Nigeria. The union broke up in the late fifties as the parts were granted independence. This specimen was lot 71178 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRITISH WEST AFRICA. 2 Shillings, 1942-KN. Kings Norton Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-64 Gold Shield. Exceeded in the PCGS census by just four examples, this exquisite near-Gem offers a great deal of eye appeal through its clean surfaces and radiating charm. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." This type was struck 1938-39, 1942, 1946-47 at Heaton and Kings Norton.
