This specimen was lot 74761 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRITISH WEST AFRICA. Shilling, 1945-KN. Birmingham (Kings Norton) Mint. George VI. PCGS SPECIMEN-66. Carefully preserved with glowing luster. From the Kings Norton Mint Collection." British West Africa comprised Gambia, Sierra Leone, Gold Coast (now Ghana) and Nigeria. The union broke up in the late fifties as the parts were granted independence. One shilling pieces were issued for the region starting in 1913. This type was issued 1938-1947, and this specimen was struck at the King's Norton Mint (mintmark KN).
