British West Africa comprised Gambia, Sierra Leone, Gold Coast (now Ghana) and Nigeria. The union broke up in the late fifties as the parts were granted independence. This type was struck but never released for circulation. The SCWC notes that all but about 167 pieces were melted. This specimen was lot 1364 in Stack's Coin Galleries sale (Irvine, July 2011).

Recorded mintage: 2,544,000.
