This specimen was lot 3627 in Goldberg sale 85 (Los Angeles, June 2015), where it sold for $247. The catalog description[1] noted, "British West Africa. Threepence, 1957-H. Elizabeth II. Scarce date. NGC graded About Uncirculated, Details (Obverse Scratched)." British West Africa comprised Gambia, Sierra Leone, Gold Coast (now Ghana) and Nigeria. The union broke up in the late fifties as the parts were granted independence. Threepences were issued for the region starting in 1913. This type was issued 1957 only, and this specimen was struck at the Heaton Mint (mintmark H). It was probably not released, as it is much scarcer than the mintage would indicate.

Recorded mintage: 800,000.

Specification: copper-nickel, 21.45 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-35.
