British West Africa comprised Gambia, Sierra Leone, Gold Coast (now Ghana) and Nigeria. The union broke up in the late fifties as the parts were granted independence. This type was struck in 1952 only. Additional pennies were struck 1956-58 in the name of Elizabeth II.

Recorded mintage: 10,542,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 9.45 g, bronze, 30.9 mm diameter, plain edge.
