British West Africa comprised Gambia, Sierra Leone, Gold Coast (now Ghana) and Nigeria. The union broke up in the late fifties as the parts were granted independence. Half penny pieces were issued from 1911. This type was issued 1949 and 1951, and this specimen was struck at the Heaton Mint (mintmark H).

Recorded mintage: 5,909,000.

Specification: 5.3 g, copper-nickel, 25.9 mm diameter.
