British West Africa 1943-KN 3 pence
This specimen was lot 33042 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2024), where it sold for $65. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRITISH WEST AFRICA. 3 Pence, 1943-KN. Birmingham (Kings Norton) Mint. George VI. PCGS AU-58. A nearly Mint State example, with good retained luster and sharp details." British West Africa comprised Gambia, Sierra Leone, Gold Coast (now Ghana) and Nigeria. The union broke up in the late fifties as the parts were granted independence. Threepence pieces were issued for the region starting in 1913. This type was issued 1938-1947, and replaced a smaller tin-brass type (KM 10b). Proofs are known for some dates but not for 1943.
