British West Africa 1947-KN 1/10 penny
British West Africa comprised Gambia, Sierra Leone, Gold Coast (now Ghana) and Nigeria. The union broke up in the late fifties as the parts were granted independence. This specimen was lot 71194 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRITISH WEST AFRICA. 1/10 Penny, 1947-KN. Kings Norton Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-65 Gold Shield. One of only 20 known, with just four in the collection, this Gem presents dazzling brilliance and shimmering luster. INCREDIBLY RARE and vibrant. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." This type was struck 1938-47. This date is rare despite the large mintage; it was probably melted without being issued. The 1947 from London is common.
