British West Africa comprised Gambia, Sierra Leone, Gold Coast (now Ghana) and Nigeria. The union broke up in the late fifties as the parts were granted independence. This specimen was lot 71175 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $228. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRITISH WEST AFRICA. 1/10 Penny, 1936-KN. Kings Norton Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-67 Gold Shield. In the name of Edward VIII. Standing alone at the top of the PCGS census report, this tremendous Gem bears the name of the soon-to-abdicate Duke of Windsor--one of the few official numismatic issues to do so. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." This type was issued 1936 only and is one of the few issues bearing the name of the short-reigned king Edward VIII.

Recorded mintage: 3,000,000 plus proofs plus more from Heaton and London.

Specification: 1.90 g, copper-nickel, 20 mm diameter.
