British West Africa comprised Gambia, Sierra Leone, Gold Coast (now Ghana) and Nigeria. The union broke up in the late fifties as the parts were granted independence. One tenth penny pieces were issued from 1907 in aluminum and from 1908 in copper-nickel. This type was issued 1912-1936, and this specimen was struck at the Heaton Mint (mintmark H).
