British West Africa 1936-KN shilling
The first specimen was lot 1586 in Stephen Album sale 30 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2018), where it sold for $393.63. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRITISH WEST AFRICA: George V, 1910-1936, 1 shilling, 1936-KN, only 30 examples known, PCGS graded Specimen-66, ex King's Norton Mint Collection." The second specimen was lot 22315 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted, "BRITISH EAST AFRICA. Shilling, 1936-KN. Kings Norton Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-66 Gold Shield. KM-12a. Struck in tin-brass with impressive glinting qualities in the fields on both sides. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." This type was struck at London, Heaton and King's Norton (shown here) 1920-28 and 1936 in substantial quantities but nice specimens are scarce. It superseded a silver type (KM 12) struck 1913-20.
