British West Africa 1936-H penny
This specimen was lot 73222 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRITISH WEST AFRICA. Penny, 1936-H. Heaton Mint. Edward VIII. NGC MS-66. This fanciful Gem is attractive with a satiny nature to the surfaces and a near flawlessly executed strike. A wonderful representative of the ever popular Edward VIII type." Edward VIII was king of Great Britain during January to October 1936. Altho many patterns exist, his short reign meant few coins made it to production prior to his abdication. This coin is an exception and is popular for that reason. As it is common, it is affordable. No pennies were struck for George V in 1936 at the Heaton mint for this colony.
Recorded mintage: 12,500,000 + more from King's Norton + more from London, a common date.
Specification: 9.37 g, copper-nickel, 30.5 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-16.
