British West Africa 1935 penny

from Stack's Bowers October 2020 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71172

British West Africa comprised Gambia, Sierra Leone, Gold Coast (now Ghana) and Nigeria. The union broke up in the late fifties as the parts were granted independence. This specimen was lot 71172 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $65. The catalog description^[1] noted, "BRITISH WEST AFRICA. Penny, 1935. London Mint. PCGS MS-64 Gold Shield. A pleasing, near-Gem quality Penny with subtle luster and medium gray toning." This is a common date of a type struck 1912-22, 1926-29, 1933-36.

Specification: 9.37 g, copper-nickel, 30.5 mm diameter.
