This specimen was lot 1425 in Stephen Album sale 32 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2018), where it sold for $99.88. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRITISH WEST AFRICA: George VI, 1937-1952, ½ penny, 1937-KN, NGC graded MS66, R. Appears to be a gem specimen coin in an MS holder; rare in any case for either grade interpretation." British West Africa comprised Gambia, Sierra Leone, Gold Coast (now Ghana) and Nigeria. The union broke up in the late fifties as the parts were granted independence. Half pennies were issued for British West Africa 1911-52 and this type is listed for 1937-47.
Recorded mintage: 4,800,000 (a common date) plus a few proofs.
